Niccolo Machiavelli (1469-1527) was a bureaucrat in Italy. He was also a comedy writer. He wrote "The Prince" (definitely not a comedy) to advise rulers on how to rule. He lived during the papacy of Pope Alexander VI, and knew the pope's son Cesare Borgia (who died at age 32). Machiavelli dedicated his book to Lorenzo di Medici, in 1505.
